Nawaz: With looming climate crisis, it’s harder than ever to enjoy the heat

Humorous comments about Satan’s armpit have been giving me flashes of a future with pay-as-you-go meters on faucets, Saleema Nawaz says.

Lighthearted quips about the heat are rapidly becoming less amusing. Jokes about frying eggs on the pavement won’t be quite so funny once this is literally possible. And humorous comments about Satan’s armpit have been giving me flashes of a possible future with pay-as-you-go meters on all the faucets and when a section of my home is being requisitioned by the government to billet American climate refugees.

It used to be that Montrealers would look forward to a hot, humid festival season as the reward for our seemingly endless frozen winters. Now we can’t even enjoy the heat without worrying about when the carefree joy of running through sprinklers might become medically mandated — or when piling into the car for summer road trips will be replaced by high-speed getaways from a city on fire. All in all, summer is a lot less fun and sexy than it used to be. And forget about showing some skin. How long until we’re slathering on SPF 8000? To paraphrase Nelly: it’s getting hot in here, so grab your fire hose.

This year, Montreal broke multiple temperature records for unseasonably warm weather at the end of March. It’s only the beginning of July and we’ve already sweated through two brutal heatwaves. We’ve heard of the deadly, punishing temperatures in British Columbia and of the tragic devastation by wildfire of Lytton, B.C., the very day after the village broke Canada’s heat record for the third day in a row. And a new study says that heat-related deaths globally are up an average of 37 per cent over the past three decades and are only expected to rise.
